Southern Blast is “a beautiful cinematic celebration of the wild landscapes, abundant marine ecosystems, and local communities that call the Southern Ocean coastlines home. The Surfrider Foundation film sheds light on one of Australia’s most urgent climate threats, and the local communities protecting our seas and our climate.
As of this month, the Victorian Labor government’s new gas project near the 12 Apostles has officially started. Fossil gas is now flowing 24/7 from just outside Port Campbell. It’s the first gas extraction licence to be approved in Victoria in a decade – and unfortunately, it’s just the beginning. Labor also plans to allow whale-deafening seismic blasting for offshore gas exploration later this year.
Please join me, Samantha Ratnam, and campaigners from Surfrider Foundation and OCEAN at a free screening of Southern Blast at Black Spark, and a discussion about how our community can work together to protect our seas and our climate.
Featuring footage shot on location in Lutruwita (Tasmania), the film connects with local personalities: from surfers to crayfishers, sustainable ocean businesses, and Traditional Custodians – it covers the unique and diverse communities that coexist alongside marine life and wild landscapes. Southern Blast is a powerful look into the relatively untouched charm of Lutruwita (Tasmania) and the threat posed by a looming fossil fuel industry…. Engaging as it is beautiful, Southern Blast has captured the wildness of the Southern Ocean and those who share a deep and integral connection with it. The film uplifts and inspires, leaving audiences with a message: this area is worth protecting, and we all have a role to play in helping to protect it from oil and gas exploration.” -Surfrider Foundation
