I am deeply concerned by recent reports of antisemitism in Brunswick. I condemn antisemitism; all forms of hate and bigotry are unacceptable and not welcome in our community. Targeting a business because it is Jewish-owned is antisemitic and unacceptable.
The Victorian Greens know that antisemitism is a growing concern for the Jewish community at home and around the globe. I have seen antisemitic graffiti and I have raised this issue with both the local police and with Merri-bek Council, who are available to remove any graffiti that includes hate speech. If you see graffiti that is concerning, please report it to Merri-bek Council here.
I encourage people to be critical of the state of Israel’s continued bombing of civilians without attacking Jewish people, many of whom are also protesting Israel’s actions.
Over the past year, unimaginable devastation and suffering has been inflicted upon the Palestinian people in Gaza by the Israeli government and military. In Australia, anti-Palestinian racism and islamophobia have also increased. Palestinians and their allies have been subjected to discrimination, intimidation, harassment and censorship. As a society we must protect and amplify the voices of those speaking out against genocide. We continue to advocate for an immediate ceasefire, the return of hostages, and the resumption of a meaningful peace process.
The Victorian Greens led the call for an inquiry into far-right extremism in Victoria. In recent months we have seen a surge of public displays by neo-Nazi groups in Melbourne’s CBD, including targeted attacks on refugee activists. We understand that these groups pose significant risk to the Jewish community, alongside all multicultural communities.
I’m proud to represent the Brunswick community, which is committed to peace and justice both locally and around the world.
