If you’re worried about your next rent increase, you’re not alone.
In the past two years 80% of rental households have had their rent hiked. Meanwhile wages are hardly growing and the cost of a bag of groceries is through the roof.
But the political power of renters is growing – and the major parties are scared.
Together we can stop unlimited rent rises and make housing more affordable for everyone.
Thanks to pressure from the movement of renters demanding fairer conditions, the Greens have secured
- An end to rental bidding, no grounds evictions and surprise fees,
- Extended notice periods from 60 to 90 days,
- Requiring proof from landlords if they try to claim your bond,
- Regulating short stays accommodation by giving owners corps the power to ban Airbnbs,
- Taxing vacant homes to stop greedy landlords and developers landbanking, &
- New heating and cooling standards that will lower energy bills for renters and make reverse cycle air conditioning mandatory in rental properties from 2031.
Now we need your help to get rent controls in Victoria.
As long as your landlord can jack up your rent however much they like – there will always be a power imbalance that will make renting insecure and unaffordable. Lots of renters avoid asking for basic repairs and minimum standards because they’re scared of a retaliatory rent rise.
That’s why we’re gathering rent hike stories to take straight to the government. It was pressure from the Greens that pushed Labor to begin to act. Now we want them to go further and introduce rent controls.
A few years ago the rent reforms we passed in Victoria would have seemed impossible, but we did it. And if we work together, we can end unlimited rent increases too.
